đź’Ą How To Clean + Prepare Irish Moss đź’Ą

In this new YouTube video we are sharing with you how to take hand harvested and sundried (directly from the ocean), Irish moss and clean it properly so that it can be used for food preparation.

When purchasing Irish moss it in this totally raw form, it is always encrusted with sea salt and often has other items found in the sea, like shells and other plant forms…we have even found the likes of little rocks and man made items that have been dumped into the ocean. So you can see that a rigorous cleaning of this valuable ingredient is most definitely important. Another reason that we needed it to be cleaned well is that we use it in our cult classic dessert (the L’il Puddin’) as well as a series of other dessert items like our kreem cakes and pies, etc. Because it comes from the ocean and is a sea vegetable (seaweed) in its raw form, it tastes like the ocean and the last thing you want in a dessert is a fishy flavor. Trust me on this, at the inception of Pixie Retreat, in the development phase of making the L’il Puddin’ kreem we used some “not clean enough” Irish moss and it was really gross and shocking to taste that fishy flavor in a sweet dessert treat (never served to the public of course). Now on the other hand, if you were planning to use it in a savory dish where you are wanting to create a fish flavor vegan style, then perhaps the cleaning does not need to be as intense. But for these intents and purposes, this video will show you how to clean it so well that there is no clue in taste that it came from the sea. However in visual, once cleaned to perfection, it will look like clear gelatinous coral. It really is truly beautiful to behold in this state.

Irish Moss is also highly nutritious. Our human body is composed of 102 minerals and nutrients. Irish sea moss contains 92 of these minerals including; magnesium, potassium, iodine, sulfur, calcium, selenium, fiber, copper, phosphorus, zinc, riboflavin and manganese. These minerals supply energy to the body, regulate digestion, and detoxify the body.

There are so many more benefits from this sea plant, including: hair growth, skin health and suppleness, enhances the libido…the list truly goes on and on. We invite you to dive into its many uses and to do some of your own research. Remember it’s great to have sources that you can rely on for plant-based life stylin’ tips, tricks of the trade, and recipes - and it is even more powerful to get curious and to back it up with a bit of your own research. Each of us is an individual with different health issues and concerns and interests and it is wise to be cognizant of this as we are seeking! This is why what may be really great for one person does not work or have the same effect for another. Be mindful and advocate for yourself. No one will ever do a better job of this than you, unless of course you are a parent advocating for your child or for someone in your care.
